Carriyo geo list

Updated May 26, 20262 min read

The Carriyo Geo List is a predefined list of states, cities, and areas for countries where postal codes alone can't reliably identify addresses.

Carriyo provides a standardized list for these countries. It gives merchants a consistent way to identify states, cities, and areas. Carriyo also uses it to map address data across carriers' requirements, set up automation and network rules, and power geo-based reporting.

The Geo List for the covered countries can be downloaded from the table below, and also from the Settings menu in the Carriyo Dashboard.

Hierarchy levels

The Geo List is organized as follows:

  1. Country, represented by the two-letter ISO country code (standardized, widely accepted).
  2. State, the highest level of political or geographic classification within a country. Terminology varies (Emirate in UAE, province in Saudi Arabia, governorate in Oman). Maps to administrative_area_level_1 in Google Maps.
  3. City, represents a city, town, or village. Maps to locality or sub_locality in Google Maps.
  4. Area, represents a district, suburb, or neighborhood within a city. Maps to sub_locality_1, sub_locality_2, or neighborhood in Google Maps.

For each level (except country), Carriyo defines a standard list with a code, an English name, and optionally a local-language name. Carriyo also maintains centroid GPS coordinates for each city and area, cross-referenced with Google Maps.

Note

For countries covered by the Geo List, use the Carriyo standard codes or names when creating a shipment via the API. If passing the code is not possible, pass the standard name and let Carriyo recognize the code automatically. Carriyo may not be able to correctly map address data to the carrier if the Geo List is not used for the countries covered.
